What are Ragdolls?

Ragdoll cats are a unique and beloved breed known for their gentle temperament and affectionate nature.
Originating in California in the 1960s, the breed was created by a woman named Ann Baker who bred a long-haired white Angora cat named Josephine with a Birman-like male cat. The resulting kittens had striking blue eyes and a gentle, floppy nature that gave them the name “ragdoll.” Ragdolls are known for their relaxed and placid temperament, often going limp in their owner’s arms like a ragdoll. Their genuine love for affection and snuggling is just one of the many reasons why Ragdolls make a lovely pet.
Ragdolls are typically friendly, social, and very gentle, making them a perfect choice for families with kids and other animals. Some even note that they are “dog-like” in their behaviour, as they enjoy their owner’s company and can even be trained to walk on a leash and perform tricks.
Besides their beautiful eyes, Ragdoll cats are known for their soft and plush coat that is a defining characteristic of the breed.
Their fur is medium to long in length and has a silky texture, which makes it easy to groom and maintain. Unlike many other long-haired breeds, Ragdoll cats have no undercoat, which means that their fur is less prone to matting and tangling.
Their coat comes in a variety of colors and patterns, including pointed, mitted, bicolor, and lynx. Ragdoll kittens are born white, with their unique coloring developing even until 3 to 4 years of age. The darker colors appear on the face, ears, legs, and tail, while the body usually remains in a lighter shade.
Ragdolls shed moderately, and regular brushing can help keep their coat healthy and tangle-free.
When compared to other breeds, Ragdoll cats are known for their large size and can even weigh up to 10 kg. It is important to note that Ragdolls continue to grow until they are 3-4 years old, so their development occurs more slowly than that of other cats.
